Tiered Sources

A primary source is the actual data or information about a topic, a secondary source is an analysis of an primary source with additional information or data added.  A primary or secondary source should be used on research papers. Lastly a tertiary source is a summary or overview of data and information from the primary and secondary sources and can be used to gather initial information about a topic but should not be used as a documented source.
